Introduction to Breast Reduction
While there are many women who long for larger breasts, there are other women who struggle with their natural breast size, which can affect their confidence, lifestyle, and ability to enjoy the world around them. If you are burdened with larger, heavier breasts, a Breast Reduction from Vickram Tandon, MD can help you lose some of the excess weight and walk a little taller. Below, we have provided some information on this surgical procedure that could be life-changing for you.
What Is A Breast Reduction?
A Reduction Mammaplasty (Breast Reduction) is a surgical procedure that reduces the size and volume of a woman’s breasts. By removing the excess breast tissue, fat, and skin, Dr. Tandon can help his patients achieve more proportionately balanced breasts in relation to their bodies.
This transformative procedure will not only address physical discomforts but also improves overall aesthetics and enhances self-confidence. Whether you desire a more manageable breast size or wish to alleviate the physical and emotional burdens associated with large breasts, breast reduction can help you achieve your goals and enjoy a more comfortable and confident life.
Some of the more common reasons women choose to receive a breast reduction include:
- Back, neck, or shoulder pain caused by the weight of their breasts

What's the first step?
Patients in the Boston area considering Breast Reduction surgery should contact the office of Vickram Tandon, MD, and schedule a consultation. During your appointment, you will meet with Dr. Tandon who will evaluate your breasts and discuss the different surgical techniques available for you.
You will be able to ask any questions about the procedure, as well as express any concerns you may have. Dr. Tandon will ask you questions about your medical history and lifestyle, so please be sure to provide honest and open answers. Based on this information, Dr. Tandon will create a personalized surgical plan that targets your specific needs and goals.
If you’re satisfied with the plan and ready to move forward, our Patient Coordinator will assist you in scheduling your procedure. We are dedicated to ensuring a smooth and successful experience for you and are excited to help you achieve your desired results.
What To Expect On The Day Of Breast Reduction Surgery?
On the day of your procedure, we will do our best to help you feel as comfortable and confident as possible. After meeting with Dr. Tandon, you will be administered anesthesia to ensure the procedure is pain-free and you remain asleep.
Dr. Tandon will then use his skillful techniques to make incisions on your breasts according to the agreed-upon surgical plan. Through these incisions, Dr. Tandon will remove any excessive breast tissue, fat, and skin, followed by the reshaping and repositioning of the remaining breast tissue.
The type of incision made will be discussed during your consultation but can consist of a few different techniques. The most commonly used techniques include the following incisions:
- A circular pattern around the areola – the incision will leave a visible line and permanent scar but can be well concealed beneath your swimsuit or bra.
- A keyhole or short scar breast reduction – is made around the areola with a vertical line down to the breast crease.
- An inverted T or “anchor-shaped” pattern – similar to the keyhole, however, this incision includes a transverse incision made in the breast fold. This technique allows for maximal removal of skin and better shaping of the breast.
Your breast reduction procedure will vary depending on the complexity of the procedure, but will typically take a few hours to complete.
Breast Reduction Recovery
After the surgery is finished, you will be taken to a recovery area, where you will be closely monitored as you wake up from anesthesia. Once you are released, you will be able to return home to recover in comfort.
You can expect your breast reduction recovery to last several weeks, during which you may experience soreness, swelling, and bruising in the treated area. These symptoms are completely normal and will gradually subside over time. You will be provided with some instructions on how to care for your incisions and manage any discomfort.
- It is essential to rest and avoid strenuous activities when you are recovering. You may also need to wear a special supportive bra to aid in healing and provide optimal support for your breasts; this will be discussed in your consultation.

Breast Reduction FAQS
Dr. Tandon uses general anesthesia when performing this surgery so you should be very comfortable throughout the duration of your procedure. You can expect to feel some soreness in the next two to three days, which is why Dr. Tandon provides you with prescription pain medication. You will also be given specific instructions on how to make the most out of your recovery, such as using ice packs or cold compresses.
Most patients will need between four and six follow-up appointments. Dr. Tandon will have you return about a week following your surgery, followed by two weeks later, a month later, and then 2 months later. Dr. Tandon will always let you know how he thinks you are responding to the procedure and when he would like to see you again so there will be no confusion.
While you may notice some immediate changes from your Breast Reduction, there will be some swelling from the surgery, which will slowly reduce. Towards the end of your second-week post-op, you will be able to have your dressings removed. You will be encouraged to continue wearing your compression bra even after this. Dr. Tandon will inform you when he feels you won’t have to wear it anymore.
After about a month, you will begin to see and feel the results; it can take about two months until you feel completely back to normal, but it is important to remember that your healing process is still occurring. After months three or four, your breasts will have fully healed and settled into their natural resting position, which is when you will see the final, more shapely results.
Absolutely! Many of our Boston Breast Reduction patients will combine their surgery with other body contouring procedures, such as a Tummy Tuck or Liposuction. If you are looking to get additional work performed, please discuss your aesthetic goals with Dr. Tandon during your consultation and he will be more than happy to provide his expert suggestions.
