Brow Lift
Boston, MA
Introduction to Brow Lift
As one of the more defining facial features, your eyebrows convey emotion and accentuate expressions, so when you have a droopy or sagging brow, it may cause you to look angry or even tired. A Brow Lift from Dr. Vickram Tandon in Boston, MA can help give your face a more youthful appearance and even take a few years off! To learn more about this procedure, please read the information we have provided below.
What Is A Brow Lift?
A Brow Lift, also referred to as an eyebrow lift or forehead lift, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that raises your eyebrows to reduce wrinkles and frown lines while lifting sagging skin. The primary goal of this treatment is to correct certain conditions that are associated with aging; this is achieved by removing or changing the muscles and skin that create drooping eyebrows, “hooding” eyelids, forehead furrows, and frown lines.
When performing a brow lift, Dr. Tandon will tighten up your facial skin, reposition your eyebrow arch to a more elevated and flattering position, and remove forehead wrinkles.
A Brow Lift often includes one or more of these different techniques:
Classic Lift
Also called a Pretrichial (hairline) incision, this classic lift makes an aesthetically “friendly” incision along the hairline to create a powerful and long-lasting look. This procedure is ideal for patients who want to lift their eyebrows while shortening the forehead by removing a strip of skin and underlying tissue along the incision.
By shortening the forehead, your hairline will be lowered – which is ideal for those with a high forehead. This procedure lifts everything upwards from your eyebrows, even addressing the shape and symmetry of your brow shape and symmetry.
Following the procedure, there will be some bruising and swelling, with most patients returning to their normal daily routine in a few weeks. Once healed, any incision scar will be practically undetectable as the incision is made in such a way that hair follicles are preserved allowing for hair growth through the scar.
Direct Brow Lift
Sometimes called a Mid-forehead Lift or a “Gull Wing” Lift, a Direct Brow Lift removes a section of skin and underlying tissue above the eyebrows or in the forehead. This procedure is best for a patient with a severely drooping brow droop and significant forehead wrinkles where Dr. Tandon can naturally hide the incision. It is preferred for patients with an extremely thin or balding hairline.
This technique eloquently lifts a sagging brow through tightening and smoothing by pulling the skin and tissue of the forehead down rather than up – making this an ideal method of lowering a receding hairline and/ or high forehead. This procedure can also address eyebrow shape and asymmetry. Dr. Tandon will take great care when positioning the scar and fully camouflaging it along your eyebrows.
Patients will experience some bruising and swelling following the procedure. They are usually comfortable returning to their normal routine activities in about two weeks.
Coronal Lift
A Coronal brow lift is similar to the classic lift, except the incision is made on the crown of your head, further back in the hairline. While this method will hide the incision well, it will increase the height of the forehead which may not be best for some patients.
Endoscopic Lift
The Endoscopic Lift is a very popular technique that only requires five small incisions that are hidden in the hairline, leaving no visible scar.
This procedure can lift everything from the hairline to the eyebrows. It tightens and smoothes the entire forehead while lifting the eyebrow area to “open up” your upper face. Eyebrow shape and asymmetry can also be addressed with this type of lift.
Following the procedure, there will be some bruising and swelling. Similarly to the Classic and Coronal lifts, patients are usually comfortable returning to their normal routine activities in about one to two weeks.
This type of lift may not be ideal for someone with severe brow descent or heavy skin, and may not be as long-lasting a lift as the pretrichial method.
Dr. Tandon will discuss the pros and cons of each technique so the two of you can determine which option is the best choice.

What's the first step?
If you are looking into a Brow Lift in Boston, MA, your first step is to schedule your consultation with Dr. Tandon. During the appointment, you can ask questions about the procedure, discuss your aesthetic goals, and have Dr. Tandon examine your face and forehead. He will also ask you some questions about your medical history to create a personalized treatment plan that integrates your aesthetic preferences, individual needs, and desired results.
Using the information he collects, Dr. Tandon will then create your surgical plan, which will include the techniques he plans on using, the anesthesia, and every other aspect of the procedure. If you are satisfied with the plan, you will meet with our Patient Coordinator to schedule your surgery. You will also be provided with some instructions to promote a higher potential of having a smooth surgery and recovery.
Please keep in mind that the more open and honest you are during your consultation, the better opportunity you will have of a successful surgery with less chance for unnecessary risks and side effects.
What To Expect On The Day Of Brow Lift?
On the day of your surgery, after meeting with Dr. Tandon and going over your procedure one more time, you will be administered general anesthesia so your brow lift procedure is more tolerable, however, in certain cases, it can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation.
Once you are sedated, Dr. Tandon will begin your surgery using the technique(s) that were discussed during the consultation. For a better understanding of what to expect during your procedure, please refer to the methods listed above.
A Brow Lift will typically take a few hours to perform the procedure, depending on the techniques Dr. Tandon uses and the degree of change you are looking to achieve.
Brow Lift Recovery
Your Brow Lift will be an outpatient procedure, which means most patients will be able to return home with the help of a family member or friend; if need be, we can help arrange for recovery at an aftercare facility. There will be some expected mild swelling and bruising, which should subside over the coming days. You will be provided post-operative instructions that will help make your recovery as easy and successful as possible.
Patients may shower and wash their hair on the first postoperative day after the drain has been removed. During the first five days after your procedure, you are encouraged to have minimal activity, routinely apply ice to your forehead, and keep your head elevated to reduce the amount of swelling.
You may go on some light walks, as well as up and down stairs, on the first day post-surgery. If you are feeling well enough, you could potentially return to work in about 10 days, but you should plan on taking a few weeks off. You should be able to return to full activity starting at three weeks postoperatively.
As with all surgical procedures, there is some scarring from a brow lift procedure. However, the area of the incisions is all designed such that the scars will be hidden within or at the hairline.

Brow Lift FAQS
It’s common to feel slight discomfort as well as a sensation of tightness throughout the forehead where the procedure took place. Swelling and bruising are typical during the first 10 days after surgery and are mostly resolved after about 2 weeks. The recovery process should not be painful, and over-the-counter medication should be enough to provide you with relief, however, Dr. Tandon will provide you with a recovery plan, including some temporary medications or prescriptions needed for an easier recovery.
The number of appointments needed for a Brow Lift varies with each of our patients, but Dr. Tandon will discuss what your recovery should look like during your initial consultation to provide a clearer idea of what your schedule will look like.
Most patients are requested to return for a few days post-surgery so Dr. Tandon can monitor their recovery, remove the drain (if there is one), and change out bandages. Usually about 10 days after your procedure, the sutures will be removed. You can expect a few more appointments over the next six months that are appropriately spaced apart. Pictures may be taken during one of these follow-ups to use as a comparison.
The results of your Brow Lift are immediately visible. Over time, post-surgical swelling will resolve, and incision lines will fade, possibly taking up to six months for your forehead to see its optimal results post-surgery once your head completely heals.
Absolutely! Many of our Boston Brow Lift patients will combine their procedure with Eyelid Surgery or a Facelift for a rejuvenated and refreshed appearance. If you’re considering multiple procedures, please inform Dr. Tandon of your goals. He will provide details and advice about the best course of action to help you achieve your desired results.
