Revision Rhinoplasty
Boston, MA
Introduction to Revision Rhinoplasty
Revision Rhinoplasty can address various issues stemming from a previous nose surgery. While many patients seek this procedure to improve the nose’s appearance, it is also commonly used to help those experiencing breathing difficulties after their initial rhinoplasty. At the practice of Vickram Tandon, MD, we offer our Boston patients the chance to achieve their desired look and improve their nasal function. If you’re considering this procedure, please read the information we’ve provided below.
What Is A Revision Rhinoplasty?
Revision Rhinoplasty is a great way to improve a “botched” nose job. About 15% of all nose surgery patients find something about their results that they are unhappy with. Many patients who undergo nose reshaping surgery decide to undergo a second procedure to further enhance the shape, size, or width of the nose. Revision rhinoplasty can also be performed to help patients who are experiencing difficulty breathing as a result of the initial procedure.
Reasons For Rhinoplasty
Below, we have included the more common reasons patients come to Dr. Tandon for a nose job revision:
This refers to the fullness of the nasal bridge after a primary Rhinoplasty that is a little higher above the tip, giving your nose a “parrot beak” appearance. It usually occurs when your nose fails to maintain adequate tip support, which results in a droopy tip, inadequate cartilage hump removal, or from scar formation.
Some patients may have Persistent Hump Deformity (occur at the upper nasal bridge, middle nasal bridge, or tip of the nose) or bony vault deviations.
A collapsed or pinched nasal tip can result if too much cartilage of the nasal tip is removed, creating the pinched look as well as nasal obstruction.
Bossae is the knuckling of the nasal tip cartilage that can occur with healing forces acting on weakened cartilage. Patients with thin skin are more often at risk of this deformity.
The Alar (a.k.a. nostril rim) retraction can occur during healing if the tip cartilages are weakened or not reinforced, resulting in excessively pulling up the nostril rim and tip asymmetry.

To perform this procedure, Dr. Tandon will make small incisions along the vertical strip of skin separating the nostrils. The skin and soft tissues will be folded back to expose the underlying cartilage and bone for easier reshaping. Once Dr. Tandon makes the necessary adjustments, he will close the incisions with sutures and you will be bandaged up. You may also be provided with a nose guard (splint) to protect your reconstructed nose from any external factors.
Revision Rhinoplasty Recovery
Rhinoplasty Revision is an outpatient procedure, so once you are released from our recovery room, you will be able to return home. You will need a relative or family member available to give you a ride home as you may be under the influence of sedation and it may be somewhat difficult to see.
Your recovery will greatly depend on the degree of correction that was performed. In most cases, patients recovering from this procedure find it not too much different than recovering from their primary Rhinoplasty.
Your nose will be bandaged up and a splint will be placed for a few days and you will be temporarily prescribed medicine and painkillers to keep you comfortable. Swelling and bruising are common but subside gradually. The results may not be visible for a few months, but you will be able to return to work and other daily activities within a couple of weeks.

Revision Rhinoplasty FAQS
No. You will be under sedation during your surgery, so it shouldn’t be a painful experience. However, during your recovery, there will be some swelling, bruising, and potential minor bleeding. On average, most patients find their recovery to be fine but find the sensation of their nose being clogged or blocked to be more uncomfortable than painful.
Dr. Tandon will have you return about a week after your Rhinoplasty Revision so he can remove any splints and observe how you are healing. You may be asked to return a few more times over the next few months to ensure that you are recovering well and are pleased with your results.
While you should only need one appointment to correct your first Rhinoplasty, there is no set number of surgical appointments that you are allowed to get if you are unhappy with your results. Do keep in mind that the more complications there are, the higher chance of risks.
Unlike other types of cosmetic surgeries, Rhinoplasty and Revision Rhinoplasty do take some time to achieve their final appearance. While any bruising or swelling should subside after two or three weeks, it can take a year or more to see the full effects of surgery.
Of course! Many of our Boston Rhinoplasty Revision patients will combine their procedure with other cosmetic enhancements, such as BOTOX or Dermal Fillers. If you’re looking for something more permanent, a Brow lift or Facelift could help improve your facial appearance. No matter what your aesthetic goals are, please bring them up during your consultation. Dr. Tandon will examine the areas you wish to treat and provide his expert suggestions.
Dr. Tandon takes great pride in eliminating complications from his plastic surgeries, however, some revision rhinoplasty risks may stem from the results of your prior surgery which can include:
- Compromised blood supply
- Damaged or missing cartilage and bone
- Diminished skin elasticity
- Internal scarring
- Unsatisfactory results
