Introduction to IPL Photofacial
So many people strive to have clear, beautiful skin, but it doesn’t help that nature and age are working against this desire. Environmental pollution, sun damage, stress, smoking, and other elements can wreak havoc on our complexion over time. As we hit the late twenties and early thirties, most of us begin noticing our skin gradually losing its once-radiant glow, because around this time, your body slows down collagen production, leaving fine lines and a duller complexion to emerge. If you’re looking for an effective way to improve your skin, an IPL PhotoFacial in Boston from Vickram Tandon, MD can brighten and refresh your appearance.
What Is An IPL PhotoFacial?
An IPL Photofacial is a non-invasive cosmetic treatment that uses a range of light wavelengths that target brown and red discolorations. It can improve the appearance of photo-aged skin, sun-induced freckles, age spots, redness caused by broken capillaries, and most benign brown pigments. Often referred to as photorejuvenation, this treatment requires minimal-to-zero downtime which makes it an ideal solution for those with busy lifestyles.
Some of the common conditions that an IPL PhotoFacial can be used to treat are:
- Acne
- Age spots
- Fine lines
- Injury scars
- Skin discoloration
- Wrinkles
During the procedure, Dr. Tandon will apply intense pulsed light (IPL) through a series of gentle pulses over the treatment area. IPL Photofacial heats the structures that hold the color, selectively damaging or destroying the pigment (sunspot) or blood vessel. The pigment is effectively broken up and disappears over several days. The result is a more even and brighter complexion. Additionally, IPL can stimulate collagen synthesis in the dermis, producing a smoother, tighter skin texture.
What Are The Benefits Of An IPL PhotoFacial Treatment?
Our Boston IPL Photofacial patients have seen many benefits for their skin which include:
- Eliminate scar tissue after multiple sessions
- Help control acne breakouts
- Kill harmful bacteria
- Reduce redness and inflammation
- Repair smaller blood vessels
- Safe, quick, and pain-free procedure
- Treatment is affordable
Who Are The Best Candidates For An IPL PhotoFacial?
Dr. Vickram Tandon has found that the best candidate for an IPL Photofacial is any adult individual with at least some of the following characteristics:
- Have blotchy or sun-damaged skin
- Have rosacea
- Keeps a positive attitude throughout treatment
- Maintains realistic expectations for the treatment results
Unfortunately, if you are currently dealing with melasma (a skin condition in which patches and spots appear darker than your natural skin tone) we can not recommend this procedure for you as this treatment could worsen that condition.
You may also not be a good candidate for an IPL PhotoFacial if you are:
- Have a family history of skin cancer
- Have keloid scar tissue
- Have severe scarring
- Recently tanned your skin using sunlight, tanning beds, or tanning creams
- Sensitive to light
- Use a retinoid cream
- Very dark-skinned
If you are still trying to determine your candidacy or would like to meet with Dr. Tandon about possible available treatments for you, please come in for a consultation.
What's the first step?
If you are interested in an IPL PhotoFacial in Boston, your first step is to contact the office of Vickram Tandon, MD, and schedule an appointment. During this initial consultation, you will meet with Dr. Tandon to discuss your aesthetic goals from this treatment. He will examine your skin and ask you questions about your medical history to determine if you’re a good candidate.
If you are satisfied with the decisions that you and Dr. Tandon agree upon, he will create your treatment plan, and our Patient Coordinator will help you schedule your first session. You may also be provided with some instructions on how to make your procedure the most effective.
What To Expect On The Day Of An IPL PhotoFacial?
When you come into our office for your IPL Photofacial in Boston, your session will begin with your skin being cleansed off. While not every patient requests it, we can apply a numbing cream to make your experience more comfortable.
We will provide you with some protective eyewear (dark glasses) to protect your eyes from exposure to the laser. Then, using the handheld IPL device, Dr. Tandon will press it directly onto your skin. The device emits targeted pulses of light that create a mild sensation that many patients compare to the feeling of a rubber band snap. The intensity of the light can be adjusted, so if at any time you feel like it’s too much, please do not hesitate to say something during your treatment.
The entire procedure takes between 20 and 30 minutes but can take up to an hour in larger areas.
